michaelpadillaDESMA9-week 8

I really enjoyed this week's topic and the artwork that is created with nanotechnology is truly mesmerizing. I think it is so cool to see scientists and artists collaborate together to create such wonderful work. For example, Professor Vesna's article with nanoscientist Jim Gimzewski was very intriguing and helped me understand how nanotechnologies influence art concepts. I honestly did not know too much about nanotechnology leading up to this lesson so I appreciated this topic even more. Both nanotechnology and media arts have a common ground in addressing the issues of manipulation, particularly sensory perception, questioning our reaction and changing the way we think (Vesna and Gimzewski). This article and the lectures showed me how nanotechnology has real potential to impact every aspect of our lives, from our bodies to even the clothes we wear. The recent progress towards using nanoparticles in real applications was discussed as a method to create the next generation of highly scalable and low-cost spectrally particular optical materials. It is possible to obtain Nanoengineered materials that enhance our ability to control light and its influence on artwork (Sayegh 2022).

After doing some research, I found an artist by the name of Enio Longo to have some amazing artwork. He is known as a pioneer of nanoart in Brazil, who seeks new horizons for his artistic/scientific movement. His inspiration comes from the geometric shapes of many of the researched nanoparticles that are only revealed using powerful microscopes (Longo 2020). NanoArt intersects art, science, and technology with features of nano landscapes and  nano sculptures. These structures are visualized with powerful research tools such as microscopes, like I mentioned. The scientific images captured are then further processed by using different scientific techniques to convert them into artworks (Orfescu 2015). What stood out to me is how these artists and scientists are using this art as a movement. They are trying to communicate with the public and raise awareness for Nanotechnology and its impact on our lives.

Lastly I found the reading provided in the unit 8 resources extremely appealing. I thought the exhibit was unique and it was nice to see Professor Vesna's wonderful work displayed. Inspired by watching the nanoscientist at work, purposely arranging atoms just as the monk laboriously creates sand images by grain, her work brings together the Eastern and Western minds through a shared process centered on patience (2010).

  1. Hi Michael! Your research into Enio Longo's work introduces an engaging perspective on NanoArt, offering an understanding of how such abstract concepts and unseen dimensions can be communicated through an artistic medium. His utilization of nanoparticle geometries as inspiration brings a unique dimensionality to his art, and it's fantastic how it’s raising awareness about nanotechnology.
