This week's topic was very intriguing to me, mainly because my parents are both in the medical field so I have always been fascinated by the body and medicine. I have not been keeping up to date with medical technologies but after doing some research I was impressed. Obviously the development of multiple safe and effective Covid-19 vaccines in less than a year may be considered one of the greater scientific accomplishments in human history. AI is one of the most exciting technologies changing the healthcare landscape. It is very valuable when it comes to detecting diseases early and for confirming an accurate diagnosis quicker. According to Hannah Burke from ProClinical, "In breast cancer care, the use of AI is enabling the review of mammograms to be 30 times faster with 99% accuracy, reducing the need for unnecessary biopsies (Burke 2022). Drug research and discovery is one of the more recent applications of AI in life sciences. This technology is able to create more efficient ways to discover and repurpose medicines, ultimately reducing the time it takes to market a new drug and reducing the associated costs (Zbrog 2022). Overall, being able to discover potentially life-threatening issues at earlier and more treatable stages will save many lives due to AI.

Last year, my mother actually had robotic surgery on her stomach. She said that the robot made the incision in her stomach and basically did the whole surgery without any surgeons having to physically operate. She also mentioned that there was a camera in her stomach during her surgery. The most widely used clinical robotic surgical system includes a camera arm and mechanical arms with surgical instruments attached to them. The surgeon controls the arms while seated at a computer console near the operating table. The console gives the surgeon a high definition, 3D view of the surgical site (Robotic surgery 2022). As stated by UCLA health, "robotic surgery is surgery with very small incisions and better magnification, resulting in faster recovery times and fewer risks" (UCLA Health 2021).

Out of all of the artists from this week, Eduardo Kac caught my eye. His bio art was compelling and my favorite project was the specimen of secrecy which are living pieces that change during the exhibition in response to internal metabolism and environmental conditions (Kac 2006). He orchestrates the metabolism of these organisms in order to produce his constantly evolving living works.

  1. Hi Michael, the story of your mother having a robotic surgery was mind-blowing to me. Before, surgeries conducted by robots sounded unreal to me, and to this date I still doubted their existence. It is comforting to see that we have already developed such advanced technology that can help surgeons perform higher-precision operations. It also allowed me to see how mechanical engineering and computer science have reformed the medical field.
