The second event I attended was the cosmological elements #2 exhibition. I attended the first one and they were both very intriguing. I believe they are having one more event so I recommend everyone to attend. It was really incredible to see all of the compelling artwork and actually hear from the artists themselves, which was my favorite part. The things they come up with and how they come up with it is truly inspiring. One of my favorite artworks displayed was "Exobiotanica" by Makoto Azuma, which featured a bouquet of flowers launched into space on a specialized vessel. Super-high resolution cameras equipped on the vessels captured an image of the bouquet every second creating thousands of art pieces. According to Azuma's website, "You can browse and select your favorite from approximately 13,000 pieces of images in total, which captured various expressions of BONSAI and BOUQUET that reached the stratosphere at the altitude of 30,000 meters and minus 50 degrees Celsius" (Azuma 2014). I thought this idea was super unique and below is a screenshot of this artwork that was shown in the event. Here we can see that he uses science and technology to capture his art like many of the other artists, which relates to what we have been studying in this course. It is almost as if technology is the canvas for these amazing artists.Exobiotanica by Makoto Azuma
Overall, it was remarkable to experience the manifestations of the elements in space and I thought it was astonishing how one artist actually got to work with real lunar soil. As stated by the curators, "Space ecology is presented in the dialectics of the cosmological development of ecologies and human interventions and ideas" (Schnugg 2021). One piece that completely shocked me was the tapestry created by Ranjit Bhatnagar. The information on this tapestry came from a record that made pictures with its sounds in order to communicate with aliens. I was blown away by this because I had never heard of these space probes and I had no clue that sounds could create images. On the tapestry is the original data that was encoded on the record to teach the aliens about math. This relates to our topic in module two which was about math and art. According to the artist, "In 1977, the two voyager space probes were launched, each carrying a golden record with music, sounds and voices from earth. Inspired by this, the rug is a translation of the audio information into a visual file and a brilliant example of our own human-centric folly" (Bhatnagar 2018). Below is a screenshot of Ranjit showing us a video of his tapestry, along with a sample of the original audio it was made from.
