Institute of Isolation by Lucy Mcrae
Above is a screenshot of Lucy McRae's observational documentary that was presented in the event, titled Institute of Isolation. Her work contemplates whether isolation, or extreme experience, may be a gateway to training human resilience. Like many of the other works displayed, the documentary is a fictional research and training ground, offering alternative methods to condition the body and adapt fundamental aspects of human biology. The film references genetic engineering, space travel, sensory deprivation and the changing relationship the body is forming with technology (McRae 2016). What I really enjoyed about this event was seeing behind of the scenes of the hard work and dedication that goes into these artist's work. It's inspiring how they are able to express themselves and their personal interests through art and science. I would recommend this event to my classmates to get inspiration for their final.
Time Capsule by Ani Liu
The screenshot above is also from the event and is a project that was created by one of the artists. This project stood out to me the most and it is basically a time capsule for earthly memories which I think is extremely unique. The project consists of a sensory token for astronauts that contains the unique scent of three memories. For example, it could be the scent of a loved one or even a home. Speculating on a future where some of us might embark a one-way trip into space, this project investigates the sensory modalities of memory beyond the digital (Liu 2017).
